A cervical cap is a reusable contraceptive device that is used with a spermicide and is inserted into a woman’s vagina. The FemCap, the cervical cap that is available in the United States, forms a tight seal around the cervix to block sperm from entering the uterus.

According to the FDA, 17 to 23 percent of the women who rely on the cervical cap might become pregnant within a year. For best protection against pregnancy and STDs, the cervical cap should be used with a male condom. The cap must be left in place for six hours after intercourse. Care and maintenance of the cervical cap are the same as that for the diaphragm.

Check with your gynecologist or local clinic to find out whether the cap is available in your area.
